The Gazebo
About Share PurchaseI don’t shoot many photo series’. The focus of photo series’ tends to be on the locations or concept rather than on creating beautiful images. I mean, yes, the images are supposed to look good, but the most important part of the series is in getting photos that match your theme, rather than making sure that each individual picture is a stand-alone great.
The photo of the house with what looks like a bite mark in the roof is fun because it’s part of Riverside Lawn and adds an interesting dimension to the series, but I’d never hang that photo on my wall. It’s perfect for the collection, but not great as art.
As I began compiling my Riverside Lawn series, I wondered whether I’d have any stand-alone photos. I was a smidge worried about this, because my own style of photography is squarely based around stand-alone images. Then I spotted this image. Like that, all my worries went away.
This is a wondrous photo to me because of the amazing contrast between the gazebo in the bright sun and the bushes which were in shade. By lighting the photo for the sun, the bushes got a lot darker and almost spot-lighted the gazebo.
