While shooting the photos for this series, I went everywhere I could (legally).  Whenever I entered one of the abandoned homes, I did so with the permission of the people boarding up the homes.  Whenever I knew the crews would be coming around to check on the houses, I made sure to be around so that I could pester them into letting me take a few photos inside.

In this particular building–the house partner to the garage with the refrigerator in it–I was not the first person to get inside, however.  A group of young teens with spray paint had walked inside a couple days earlier–it wasn’t hard, the back door was open; not unlocked, but wide open–and they had gone to town on the second floor.

You knew the kids were young because they weren’t tagging the walls or spraying gang signs on the interior; they were quite content to simply spray paint swear words on the walls.  The paint was somewhat reflective, so it gave an eerie feel to the rooms, kind of like you were in a haunted house… or a rave.

Directly behind me on a different wall, someone had simply written ‘shit’.  If I’m being honest, I’m kind of jealous that they are able to derive large amounts of enjoyment by just spray painting swear words on walls.  I wish it was that easy for me!
