I knew I was going to go up and shoot Riverside, Illinois from a helicopter in the seconds after I landed from my helicopter ride where I shot the Chicago skyline. It was just a matter of when.
Blue skies are beautiful and lovely to see. They just don’t show up in photos very well. They’re kind of–how should I put this?–boring. They are textureless sections of the same color spread out over a fairly large chunk of photo real estate.
So how did I know when it was the proper time to go up to shoot Riverside? Well, the sky looked like this. I took this photo from the cockpit of the helicopter as we hovered about two feet off the ground. I look at it now and just nod. This was the right day to do this shoot.
