Jeff Nathanson

Of all the celebrities I’ve shot, I don’t think anyone wanted to be in front of my camera less than Jeff Nathanson. Promoting his one and only directorial effort, The Last Shot, Nathanson recognized that he had to participate in the photo shoot, but admitted he hated having his picture taken. So it was a short shoot. This was my favorite image from it, of Nathanson at a bar glancing outward. Nathanson was incredibly good natured about the whole thing and readily owned the fact that he didn’t like photo shoots (which not many people do), but he was very happy to be done.
One thing that I always instruct people to do when shooting is to look straight out their noses. If you want to look left, point your nose to the left. Do not point your eyes to the left and keep your nose forward; doing so leaves a lot of white space in your eyeballs that can look off. To this day, it bothers me that I didn’t ask Nathanson to ‘follow his nose’ with his eyes. I remember thinking that I should instruct him to do that… and then thinking better of it because of his discomfort. In retrospect, I think that was the wrong decision.
