Midway to the Chicago Skyline
About Share PurchaseOne of the benefits of going up in the air in a helicopter is the helicopter’s maneuverability. A plane can’t hover while a helicopter can. A plane has a turning radius measured in miles, not feet. And, most importantly for this image, a plane has to reach a certain speed in one direction (hopefully on a runway) before taking off, a helicopter can simply go up. The latter is an ability that allowed me to shoot the Southwest Terminal at Midway with the Chicago Skyline looming (literally) on the horizon while on our way out of Midway’s airspace.
From an engineering/design perspective, I find the way that the main runway seems to point directly at the Sears (Willis) Tower most pleasing. It’s almost as if someone knew I would be taking this exact picture and put a giant arrow on the ground directing people’s attention from the airport directly to the skyline.
