Rubble in Detroit
About Share PurchaseI have a soft spot in my heart for abandoned buildings. Particularly and especially those that are crumbling down. It’s why I love shooting in Detroit as much as I do.
This building is near the Eastern Market. This scene is on the mezzanine level and, if you’re on location, almost completely dark. When I was stumbling through this hallway/room, the only real light coming in was shining on the red and blue graffiti on the far white wall. With the cinder blocks falling in through the one window, I could help but take notice of the way the pile sort of pointed at the graffiti. I popped up my tripod and got this beautiful image.
As an aside, the reason the ceiling is shiny is because it’s wet and reflecting the incoming light. The water was dropping down from the ceiling onto some styrofoam boards on the first floor and making a really unusual set of noises that noises that sounded like the beat of an extended house music song.
