The Bean in Fog
About Share PurchaseThis was a night of crazy fog. And I mean crazy fog. If you were standing on Columbus Drive, you couldn’t see a single light from Michigan Avenue, less than a half block away. Even crazier, if you were on Wabash, you wouldn’t have a clue that there was any fog anywhere. When I learned of this bizarre discrepancy, I instantly began running down the list of scenic hot spots between Lake Shore Drive and Michigan Avenue. I came up with two: The Bean and Buckingham Fountain.
The overall feel of the night was eerie. Not only was there London-like fog present, but, as you can see reflected in the Bean here, there were a lot of low lying clouds. It was almost like you were boxed in by fog. Because of these conditions, the air was basically glowing. So when people see this photo and instantly notice the bright light behind the Bean, mere seconds pass before they then ask how much it’s Photoshopped (I get asked this a lot and the answer is invariably: “It’s not Photoshopped”). And it’s not Photoshopped.
It’s hard to believe, but this photo doesn’t begin to do the night’s lighting justice. Everything around me that night was a luminescent yellow, almost pulsing with energy. Nothing looked real. It looked like some CGId scene in a summer blockbuster. Only it was real. God, I love fog. Here’s a link to a photo I didn’t take on a non-foggy night. There’s a *slight* difference.
