The Swan Pretzel
About Share Purchase
Shooting (photographs of) wildlife in an urban environment is an interesting proposition. The animals know what humans are and generally like to stay away from them. If they spot you walking towards them, there’s not much of a chance of that they’ll stick around to pose for you. So, the trick is to impede their view of you.
This swan was on an island in the middle of a large pond that had one enormous tree on it. I angled myself so that the tree was positioned between the swan and me and then waded into the pond, heading toward the island. When I got within 20 feet of the swan, I snuck my camera lens around the side of the tree and took a couple of shots of him, including this one. He heard the ‘clicks’, looked at me with a cautious eye and then after a few second stare down, headed into the water himself.
