The Wave at Nags Head, North Carolina
About Share PurchaseI accidentally ended up traveling to the Outer Banks of North Carolina during a Nor’easter. There were biblical amounts of rain, wind so fierce and strong that I at times pondered whether it would hold up my body weight if I leaned into it and flooding like no one’s business. The result of this was that there were crazy waves. And when I say crazy, I mean crazy. The wave in this photo is around 25 feet tall.
Flooding had restricted access to any towns south of Nags Head, so I stayed in Nags Head. Late in the day, I decided to venture out on the Nags Head fishing pier. There were two people working in the pier office and that was it. No one else was there. When I exited the office onto the pier itself, I quickly understood why. I was atop a wooden fishing pier in gale force winds in the rain. I walked out to the very end of the pier took some photos including this image and that’s when things got a little weird. I looked back towards the office–probably a block away at this point–and saw the entire pier moving back and forth. The waves were making the pier weave left and right. At that point, it was time to go.
I really like this photo though. It is one of the rare photos that really does capture the essence of what it was like to be there.
