The Winchester Factory Hallway
About Share PurchaseWhenever I shoot images with straight lines in them, I like for the straight lines to be parallel or perpendicular to the sides of the photo itself (think: the pipes running horizontally on the ceiling). It’s my inner Wes Anderson.
For the life of me though, I cannot tell whether this photo is straight or not. By every metric I can think to utilize, it is straight. However, on the right side of the hallway, the walls appear to tilt inward. They do on the left side as well. When I rotate the image a sliver to correct this, it exacerbates the opposite walls’ tilt. After starring at this for a number of minutes, it finally dawned on me that the reason it looked like the walls were crooked was because the walls were, in fact, crooked. Such are the joys and beauties of shooting in an abandoned and derelict factory.
What this photo doesn’t quite convey is the true darkness that was present when I shot this. Despite the fact that it was 10AM on a bright and sunny morning, there was almost no light reaching this section of the factory. It really was quite creepy. The only reason I even decided to venture down this wing of the building was because I was attracted to that creepiness.
One other thing to note: this was on the second floor of the factory and the rooms, if you can call them that, to the left of the hallway had no floors in them. Thank god I didn’t find out about that the hard way.
