Wilson, North Carolina after the Hurricane
About Share PurchaseYou wouldn’t know it by looking at this photo, but this is what it looks like in Wilson, North Carolina when the power is out. Granted, it’s the most light you’ll even see at night during a power outage, but, that’s part of the reason I took the picture.
A pretty bad hurricane had just swept through town leaving power lines downed and huge lakes of water in places they shouldn’t be; namely on the highways. I stopped in Wilson because it was literally as far as I could go. I drove around town for a little while trying to find food–I ended up grilling out with a family I met who lived nearby–and drove on this block on my way back to my water logged hotel room. (Word to the wise: when driving to the scene of a government declared disaster area, making hotel reservations before you leave. Do not reason that everyone will have left and that because of that, there will be lots of hotels and hotel rooms to choose from once you get there).
What impressed me about this scene was the green. The street light was casting a green shadow on everything below it and it looked really cool. The house with the orange/yellow lights was using battery operated lights and the family was sitting outside. As for how the street light was still on, I have zero idea. Neither did any of the people on the block I spoke to.
